Glossy vs. Matte Finishes for Plastic Mouse Enclosure: Injection Molding Surface Treatment Guide

May 12,2026
Glossy and matte surface finish comparison for plastic mouse enclosures - injection molding texture guide by FromRubber

The surface finish of a mouse enclosure defines not only its visual appeal but also tactile perception, grip performance, and resistance to fingerprints and scratches. At FromRubber, we have produced over 2.8 million mouse shells with finishes ranging from mirror-like high gloss to deeply textured matte. This guide compares glossy and matte surface treatments from an injection molding perspective, covering mold texturing, material selection, processing parameters, and application-specific recommendations.

Glossy

High-gloss, mirror-like, reflective

Matte

Non-reflective, textured, velvet-like

Mouse Enclosure High-Gloss Surface Finishes

High-gloss finishes deliver a premium, luxurious appearance with deep reflectivity. Achieving a true glossy surface on a mouse enclosure requires meticulous mold polishing and process control.

Mold steel requirement

SPI-A1 or SPI-A2 grade polish on mold cavities. Requires high-grade stainless steel such as S136H or NAK80. Diamond polishing compounds used to achieve Ra below 0.05 micrometers.

Preferred materials

ABS, PC, PC/ABS, PMMA. Amorphous resins replicate mirror finishes best. Crystalline materials like nylon or POM are unsuitable for high-gloss due to inherent surface roughness.

Processing challenges

Visible weld lines, flow marks, and gate blush become extremely obvious. Requires variotherm heating or precise gate placement. Dust-free environment mandatory.

Glossy finishes excel in showcasing vibrant colors, RGB light diffusion, and creating a jewel-like appearance. However, they reveal every fingerprint, dust particle, and microscratch — requiring regular cleaning. Best suited for display-oriented products and premium office mice where aesthetics take priority over long-term wear concealment.

Mouse Enclosure Matte Surface Finishes

Matte finishes provide a non-glare, smooth-to-touch surface that hides fingerprints, small scratches, and molding imperfections. The texture is created by electrical discharge machining (EDM) or chemical etching of the mold cavity.

Mold texturing methods

EDM with fine electrode settings produces VDI 12-33 grades. Chemical etching creates custom leather or carbon-fiber patterns. Laser texturing enables high-resolution logos and gradients.

Material compatibility

All thermoplastics accept matte textures. PC/ABS, ABS, nylon, and even glass-filled grades perform well. Textured surfaces also hide weld lines and flow marks effectively.

Processing advantages

Lower mold temperature tolerance, reduced cooling time, easier ejection. Defects like sink marks and minor short shots become visually disguised under texture.

Matte finishes dominate gaming peripherals and productivity mice where prolonged grip comfort and resistance to visible wear are critical. The subtle texture provides a non-slip surface even with sweaty hands. FromRubber offers twelve standard matte grades ranging from fine velvet to coarse granite patterns.

Glossy versus Matte: Comprehensive Comparison

Standard surface finish grades for mouse enclosure  injection molds

SPI (USA) grades for glossy

  • SPI-A1: Mirror finish
  • SPI-A2: High gloss
  • SPI-A3: Standard gloss
  • SPI-B: Semi-gloss

VDI 3400 (Germany) matte grades

  • VDI 12: Fine matte (velvet)
  • VDI 21: Standard matte
  • VDI 30: Coarse matte
  • VDI 33: Deep texture

Custom chemical etching

  • Leather grain
  • Carbon fiber pattern
  • Diamond or geometric
  • Logo/text integration

How to choose the right finish for your mouse project

Choose glossy finish when:

  • The product is positioned as a premium, luxury, or fashion accessory
  • RGB lighting effects need to diffuse through a polished surface
  • The mouse will be displayed in glass showcases (retail packaging)
  • Target audience prioritizes visual wow-factor over practicality
  • Production volume is lower, allowing extra care in handling

Choose matte finish when:

  • Product targets gamers, programmers, or heavy daily users
  • Grip consistency is important across extended sessions
  • You want to hide potential molding imperfections or fingerprints
  • The mouse will be used without cleaning frequently
  • You prefer a modern, industrial, or stealth aesthetic

Hybrid designs: combining glossy and matte

Many premium mouse designs use selective surface treatments. FromRubber specializes in creating multi-finish tools where glossy and matte areas coexist on the same part. Common hybrid approaches include:

  • Glossy top shell + matte side grips: Combines visual appeal with practical handling. Side grips receive VDI 21-30 texture while main dome remains SPI-A2 polished.
  • Glossy accent stripe on matte body: Creates visual contrast highlighting brand lines or scroll wheel areas.
  • Matte buttons on glossy chassis: Ensures button tactile differentiation while maintaining premium overall look.

Achieving hybrid finishes requires precision mask masking during mold texturing or two-shot molding. FromRubber has delivered over 80 hybrid-finish mouse projects with zero bleed between different surface zones.

Secondary surface treatments

Both glossy and matte shells can receive additional coatings:

  • Soft-touch paint (matte or satin): Adds rubber-like feel, available in multiple colors. Best applied over textured surfaces for adhesion.
  • UV hard coating: Increases scratch resistance; essential for high-gloss shells to maintain clarity.
  • Anti-fingerprint coating: Hydrophobic clear layer reduces visible smudges on glossy surfaces.
  • Metallic or chrome plating: Only feasible on glossy polished ABS or PC substrates.

FromRubber surface finish expertise

With over 300 mouse enclosure projects completed, we offer comprehensive surface finish consultation including mold texture selection, material compatibility analysis, and sample plaque production. Clients receive physical finish samples across 15+ standard and custom textures before mold steel cutting. Our in-house EDM and polishing shop guarantees consistent surface quality across production batches of any volume.

Property Glossy Finish Matte Finish
Visual appearanceMirror-like, reflective, luxuriousNon-reflective, subdued, modern
Fingerprint resistancePoor – shows every markExcellent – hides oils and smudges
Scratch visibilityVery high – fine scratches stand outLow – texture masks light scratches
Grip feel (dry hands)Slick, can feel slipperyMild friction, secure grip
Grip feel (wet/sweaty)Very slippery – poor for gamingStill grippable – texture channels moisture
Mold costHigher – requires diamond polishingSimilar – EDM texturing adds moderate cost
Cycle time impactLonger – needs lower cooling ratesStandard – no significant increase
Defect concealmentPoor – reveals weld lines, flow marksExcellent – hides most cosmetic defects
