Custom Silicone Sunglasses Pouch: Which Details Should Be Finalized Before Quotation?

Oct 26,2026

Two suppliers quote "silicone sunglasses pouch, 5,000 pcs" and the numbers come back 40 percent apart. Neither is lying. One is pricing a flat sleeve with a single colour and a printed logo; the other is pricing a two-colour shell with a molded logo, a retaining band and an individual polybag. The quote never says which. That gap in scope - not the price itself - is what delays a project for six weeks.

Why Does a Silicone Sunglasses Pouch Need More Than a Product Name for Quotation?

A product name describes a category. A quote describes a specific piece of tooling, a specific compound, a specific sequence of operations. When the two are not connected, the buyer compares numbers that were never comparable, then negotiates a price that will change as soon as the drawing arrives.

A pouch with a molded motif, an edge band and a strap is three tooling decisions, not one product name.

A Soft Sleeve and a Structured Case Are Different Projects

A soft sleeve is essentially a shaped pocket: one cavity, one compound, a simple open mouth, and a wall thin enough to flex when the frame goes in. A structured case adds a lip, a closure, sometimes a second component, and a wall that has to hold a curve on its own. The material volume is different, the mold is different, and the number of operations after molding is different.

Both can legitimately be called a silicone sunglasses pouch. That is exactly why the first line of a quotation request should be a structure, not a name.

Similar-Looking Designs Can Require Different Molds

Two renders can look identical and need completely different tooling. A raised band that wraps around the case needs a parting line that follows the band. A mouth that curves back on itself needs either a split cavity or a collapsible core. An undercut near the temple entry may be strippable in a soft compound and impossible in a firm one.

Reference photos carry none of that information. A sketch with three dimensions and a marked opening direction carries most of it. This is why toolmakers ask for a drawing with tolerances before they will commit to a mold design.

A Quotation Is Only Meaningful When Its Scope Is Clear

Tooling, trial samples, revisions, molding, deflashing, decoration, inspection, individual packaging, export packing and freight are separate cost blocks. Suppliers bundle them differently. One price may include the mold and one may not; one may assume bulk packing and one may assume a printed box.

The fix is not to demand a breakdown for its own sake. It is to ask each supplier to state what is included, what is excluded, and what they assumed when they filled the gaps. A project that runs from design review to sample approval has more chargeable steps than most buyers expect, and each one has to land somewhere in the quotation.

Which Product Specifications Should Be Confirmed First?

Define the Sunglasses Size Range the Pouch Must Accommodate

Give the length, width and folded height of the target frame, and say whether the pouch has to fit one frame or a family. A pouch built around one frame can be tight and efficient. A pouch built around a family needs clearance at the extremes, and that clearance is where the price and the bulk both come from.

If the frame is still in development, send the current CAD envelope and mark it as provisional. A provisional range with a note is far more useful than a blank field, because it lets the supplier flag what will change if the range moves.

Decide Whether the Pouch Needs a Closure or a Simple Opening

An open sleeve, a slit mouth, a folded flap, a tab-and-snap, a retaining band: each one changes convenience, retention, material use and mold complexity. A snap needs a seat, a seat needs a boss, and a boss needs a thicker wall around it. A band needs a path to sit in and a way to be assembled.

What often gets missed is the interaction order. A pouch that closes neatly but requires the user to align a tab with one hand will generate complaints that no inspection report will catch. Describe how the product should be used - one hand, hanging from a strap, dropped into a bag - and let the supplier reflect that in the concept.

Identify the Main Material and Hardness Requirements

"Silicone" is a family, not a specification. Grade, hardness, colour and any special requirement all narrow the options, and some combinations narrow them quickly. Hardness in particular should be written against a test method, because a number without a method is not comparable: Shore A hardness is measured under ISO 48-4 or ASTM D2240, and the two are related but not interchangeable in casual use (ASTM D2240).

If you do not have a confirmed compound, describe behaviour instead: should it hold its shape when empty, should it drape, should it grip a smooth frame, should it stay soft in a cold car. A supplier can translate behaviour into a starting point; they cannot translate a blank.

Separate Essential Features From Optional Design Details

Sort the feature list into three columns before sending it: must have, would like, and decorative. A molded logo can be a must have if brand recognition depends on it, or a decorative detail if a hangtag would do the same job at a fraction of the tooling cost.

This single exercise saves more quotation rounds than any other. It tells the supplier where to protect the design and where they are free to simplify, and it gives you a defensible answer when the first quote comes back higher than expected.

What Customization Details Can Change the Quoted Cost?

Logo Method and Placement

Molded, embossed, debossed, printed, laser etched, or a separate applied part. Each has a different tooling impact and a different durability profile. A molded logo is cut into the cavity and costs once; a printed logo costs every cycle and needs its own process step. Placement matters as much as method: a logo on a curved surface near the mouth needs more draft and more careful artwork preparation than one on a flat panel.

Send vector artwork, not a screenshot, and send it at the size it will actually appear. Fine lines that look crisp on a 300 mm monitor can disappear at 2 mm on a molded surface.

Color Requirements and Multicolor Construction

A single-colour part is one compound and one molding step. A two-colour part may be two-shot molding, a separately molded insert, or a painted or printed accent - and those are not interchangeable in cost or in appearance. Colour boundaries also need to be defined: a hard line between two compounds needs a shut-off in the mold, while a soft transition cannot be molded at all.

If the brand palette is not final, say so and give the closest reference you have. Suppliers can quote a colour-matched project with a provisional reference and confirm it at sample stage; they cannot quote a colour that has no reference.

Surface Finish and Packaging

Matte, satin, gloss, or a textured grip area. A texture is cut into the mold and adds tooling time, and it changes how the part releases. If the surface is meant to hide fingerprints, say that, because it points to a different texture than one intended purely for grip.

Packaging is where quotes drift most. An individual polybag, a printed sleeve, a rigid box, a label applied to the bag, an insert card, a barcode sticker: each is a separate line. If packaging is not needed for the first estimate, say that explicitly so the supplier does not pad the quote to cover an unknown.

What Order Information Does a Manufacturer Need?

Provide the Expected Order Quantity and Reorder Plan

Quantity affects how tooling is amortised, how compound is purchased, how the press schedule is planned and how packaging is sourced. It also affects whether a two-cavity or a multi-cavity mold makes sense, which in turn changes the tooling price.

If you expect repeat orders, say so with an annual estimate rather than a promise. A supplier who knows a first run is a trial can plan the tool for a longer life instead of pricing a short-run compromise.

Confirm Whether Tooling and Samples Are Included

Ask directly: does this number include mold design, mold fabrication, trial samples, revision rounds and production tooling? A tooling charge and a unit price are different things and should never be merged into one line without explanation.

It is also worth clarifying who owns the mold, where it is stored, and what happens if you move production. These questions are cheaper to ask before the order than after.

Define Packaging, Shipping and Delivery Requirements

Destination, packing format, and the delivery date you actually need. A factory-gate price and a delivered price contain different things, and comparing them without adjustment is one of the most common sourcing errors in this category. Ask each supplier to quote on the same trade term.

Which Details Can Remain Open During the First Inquiry?

Hanging from an umbrella pole, the strap and the mouth are the two details users judge first - and both are usually left open in a first inquiry.

Plenty of them - as long as they are labelled as open. A first-pass quotation can be built on provisional inputs, but the assumptions should be written down so both sides know what will move the number later.

  • Exact hardness, if you want the supplier to recommend a starting compound.
  • Final wall thickness, pending a design review.
  • Logo size and final artwork, if the identity is still being developed.
  • Colour codes, if the palette exists but is not approved.
  • Packaging artwork, if packaging is not needed in the first estimate.
  • Decoration method, if more than one option is viable.

Write provisional next to each one. A supplier reading "TBC" will either ignore it or price the most expensive interpretation; a supplier reading "provisional - will confirm after sample" will price a sensible middle and tell you the delta.

How to Prepare a Quotation Request That Suppliers Can Compare

The goal is a document where two suppliers cannot quietly answer different questions. A one-page brief usually does it:

  • Structure type, with a sketch or reference image and the opening direction marked.
  • Target frame dimensions and the size range the pouch must cover.
  • Material and hardness, or the behaviour you want if the compound is open.
  • Colour map, with the number of colours and where each one sits.
  • Logo artwork, intended method and final size.
  • Estimated quantity, order frequency, and whether a trial run comes first.
  • Packaging, labelling and delivery expectations.
  • Any compliance or documentation requirements for the destination market.

Then add one line to the request: please state your assumptions, exclusions, tooling charge, sample charge and the quantity basis of the unit price. Suppliers who answer that line clearly are usually the ones worth continuing with, because the answer tells you how they think.

A quick comparison of what actually differs between two quotes

Scope itemOften assumed by supplier AOften assumed by supplier B
StructureFlat sleeve, open mouthShell with lip and retaining band
ColourSingle colour, no boundaryTwo compounds with a shut-off line
LogoPrinted after moldingMolded into the cavity
ToolingQuoted separatelyIncluded in unit price

None of these differences is dishonest. They are the reason a quotation has to be read as a scope document rather than a price tag.

Conclusion

A useful quotation starts with a shared understanding of the product, not with a long specification sheet full of unconfirmed values. Structure, frame range, opening, material, colour, logo method, quantity and packing are enough to price a project honestly - and each one you leave blank is a decision someone else will make for you.

FromRubber has been molding custom silicone in Dongguan since 2010, with mold making, molding and finishing in-house, so a quotation can be built around real tooling rather than a template. If you have a pouch concept, a reference image and an estimated quantity, send them to the sales team or to karl@fromrubber.com and we will tell you which assumptions we had to make.

FAQ

Can I request a quotation without a finished CAD drawing?

Yes. A sketch with overall dimensions, the opening direction and a marked size range is enough for a first estimate. The quote will carry assumptions about wall thickness and tolerances, and those should be listed so you know what will change once a drawing exists.

Does the custom silicone sunglasses pouch quotation include the mold?

It depends on the supplier, and that is exactly why you should ask. Some quote tooling separately, some amortise it into the unit price. Ask for the tooling charge, the unit price and the quantity basis as three separate lines.

Which details have the biggest impact on the initial quote?

Structure and colour count usually dominate, followed by logo method and packing. A sleeve and a closed shell can differ more in tooling than in material, and a second colour adds both tooling and cycle complexity.

Should I finalize silicone hardness before contacting a manufacturer?

No, but you should describe the behaviour you need. If you already have a hardness figure, state the test method with it, because a Shore A value without a method is difficult to compare across suppliers.

Can a manufacturer help review my pouch design before sampling?

That is the normal sequence. A design review before tooling is cheaper than a revision after it, and most structural problems - undercuts, thin sections, closure seats - are visible on a section drawing long before a sample exists.
